A Mini-Guide to Buying Food in Supermarkets and Markets in Tampere
Navigating the supermarkets and markets in Tampere can be a delightful experience for both residents and visitors alike. I am focusing on the centre and Hervanta, since is where most students are. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most popular ones:
Center
-
Prisma: A hypermarket with a vast selection ranging from groceries to electronics.
- Location: 24h Prisma Kaleva, Tampere
- 24h Prisma: For late-night or early morning needs, the 24-hour Prismas are a lifesaver.
- Location: 24h Prisma Lielahti, Tampere
-
K-Citymarket: Part of the Kesko chain, K-Citymarket offers a vast range of products, including a good selection of organic products.
- Location: K-Citymarket Turtola, Tampere
-
S-Market: Known for its fresh produce and Finnish products. They often have good weekly deals.
- Location: S-Market Tammela, Tampere
-
Lidl: A German chain with a no-nonsense approach, Lidl offers good quality products at competitive prices. Their bakery items are especially popular.
- Location: Lidl Hervanta, Tampere
Differences to Note:
- Price Range: Lidl tends to be te most affordable, followed by S-Market. Prisma and K-Citymarket can be a bit pricier, but they often have a broader selection.
- Local Produce: While all supermarkets stock Finnish products, K-Citymarket and S-Market have a particular emphasis on local produce.
- International Products: If you’re looking for international groceries, Prisma tends to have a wider selection.
Hervanta
If you live in Hervanta, welcome! anyhow, groceries are very easy. You have Kauppakeskus Duo, which is a shopping mall where you can find a Lidl, S-Market, and a K-Market. Other important shops here is R-Kioski (you can charge your bus/tram card here, and get a SIM card among other things). Tokmanni! also an important shop, it is specially good to buy cleaning supplies that the other stores have less variety. And of course Alko, where you can buy alcohol from all around the world.
Remember to always carry a reusable shopping bag, as most Finnish supermarkets charge for plastic bags. Also, keep an eye out for seasonal products, especially during summer and Christmas, as Finnish supermarkets often offer special products during these times.
